Jaguars edge Chiefs 31-28

The Jacksonville Jaguars have beaten the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 in a back-and-forth contest in Florida on "Monday Night Football."

Trevor Lawrence rushed for the winning touchdown with 23 seconds left in the game on a wild play that saw him fall to the ground twice. It was his second rushing score of the game to go along with a touchdown pass he threw to Parker Washington. The Jaguars also got a touchdown from Devin Lloyd on a 99-yard interception return.

Patrick Mahomes threw for 318 yards, one touchdown and one interception and also rushed for a score in the loss, while Kareem Hunt added two touchdowns on the ground.

Take a breath over the next two days, football fans (or watch some playoff baseball if that interests you), because Week 6 is going to be here before you know it — and start with a bang.

The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off their first loss of the year, head up north to The Meadowlands in New Jersey to renew their bitter NFC East rivalry with the New York Giants.

The Chiefs will be back home in Kansas City for Week 6 but a difficult task awaits them as the Detroit Lions roll into town for a “Sunday Night Football” melee.

Kansas City will then host the Raiders in Week 7.

So, EverBank Stadium offers a home-field advantage now? Jacksonville is 3-0 at home this season after beating Kansas City tonight.

The Jaguars’ next two games are at home against Seattle and the Los Angeles Rams. Those are two good teams, but if Jacksonville can overcome Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, it can beat those two teams.

Could 6-1 be in the Jaguars’ future? I don’t think many folks saw that coming.

Improved NFL kickoff rules

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new NFL kickoff rules. Are you listening, college football?

But we have seen some huge mistakes by kickers late in games. It happened in Thursday night’s game and helped San Francisco beat the Los Angeles Rams. And it happened again tonight as a kickoff out of bounds set up Jacksonville at the 40-yard line with plenty of time to drive for the winning score.

With all of the long field goals we’re seeing (the balls are juiced!) and blocked field goals and extra points, the kicking game has been an adventure in the early part of this season.

K.C.’s special teams under longtime coordinator Dave Toub typically provide the team a weekly boost.

That wasn’t the case in a competitive game on Monday night.

The Chiefs’ gunners routinely missed blocks, which limited the opportunity to return punts. A holding penalty negated a 63-yard kickoff return by Brashard Smith, and later in a tie game, the Jaguars’ LeQuint Allen Jr. broke free for a 38-yard kickoff return to set up a go-ahead field goal.

On the ensuing kickoff, K.C. was flagged for an illegal double-team block, which started the offense’s next possession inside the 15.

Then, after K.C. took the lead, kicker Harrison Butker booted the kickoff out of bounds to give the Jaguars the ball at the 40.

And finally, with one last chance to come back, the Chiefs had a holding penalty on their final kickoff return with 23 second left.

It’s a compliment to the Chiefs that it’s noticeable when their special teams get outplayed. But during a critical contest early in the season, that’s exactly what took place.

The biggest question for the Chiefs coming into the week was this: Could they back up last week’s dominant offensive effort against the Baltimore Ravens with another strong effort?

The answer — outside of one interception — was a resounding “yes.”

K.C.’s offense was dominant from the start. Mahomes found multiple open receivers downfield, and the run game even showed signs of explosiveness with a 33-yard rush from Kareem Hunt.

There were also other positive signs. Tyquan Thornton showed an ability to continue making contested catches. Rookie Brashard Smith continued to become more involved with the offense while breaking free into the secondary multiple times.

In the end, the Chiefs posted 7.7 yards per play — the sixth-highest mark by any NFL team in a game this season.
